Description: It’s full name is Perro de Presa Canario (Canarian Dog of Prey), also known as the Dogo Canario, Canary Dog, Perro Basto and a Verdino. Comes from a background of herding and guard dogs. The dog’s main duty in the early 1900’s was to guard the farms, help guide the cattle and get rid of any unwanted stray dogs. In the 1940’s the breed started to diminish but was revived once again in the 1970’s.

Height: Males and females heights range from 21.5-25.5 inches
Weight: Males, 95-135 pounds, females, 85-110 pounds.

Colors: Colors can vary from brindles to fawn, with black and/or white markings.
Coat: Short, flat and smooth single coat with coarse hair; it has a very fine coat.

Temperament: Unstable temperament
With Children: Good
With Pets: Not good, aggressive with other dogs
Special Skills: Very affectionate and well behaved towards it’s owners.

Watch-dog: Good, loyal to it’s family
Guard-dog: Good, very protective of it’s property. Excellent home guardian, wary of strangers.

Care and Exercise: Moderate exercise with little grooming.
Training: Obedient, recommends to be trained while they’re still pups.
Learning Rate: Highly intelligent and very athletic.

Activity: Very quiet, likes it’s daily exercise outdoors.
Living Environment: Urban household or helpful farmhand.

Health Issues: Hip dysplasia is sometimes a problem.

Life Span: Around 10-14 years.
Litter Size: Relatively small litters.

Country of Origin: Canary Islands (belonging to Spain), northwest of Africa.
History: It’s a cross from between Bulldogs, Mastiffs and Native dogs (Bardino Majero) in the 19th century. This resulted in very powerful, muscular, large-boned dog, which were used for fighting until 1940, when dog fighting was banned.
