Thai Ridgeback Kennels Description: The Thai Ridgeback is found mainly in Thailand, also known as the “Mah Thai Lung Ahn.” There are very intelligent dogs, which tend to have a mind of their own. The Thai Ridgeback is a medium sized dog, it has a wedged-shaped head, pricked ears with a short coat. It’s one of the oldest dog breeds in the world.
Weight: Males range from 42-53 pounds, females range from 37-48 pounds. Although the Thai has been known to reach a weight up to 75 pounds. Colors: Light chestnut red, black, silver or blue. Coat: Very short and soft, with a ridge of hair along the back. Temperament: Intelligent protective dogs With Children: Good With Pets: Good, they don’t cause any problems with other dogs. Special Skills: Hunting and watchdog. They are very tough and active with excellent jumping and climbing skills. Watchdog: Good Guard-dog: Good Care and Exercise: Daily exercise with little grooming, brushing occasionally will keep the coat looking smooth. Training: Gentle and consistent approach. They are very active and agile. Learning Rate: They are moderate learners. Trainer should be firm; obedience training is strongly recommended while they are pups. Activity: Moderate, they have considerable stamina; they are more tentative around strangers. Living Environment: Loves to run around in a secure yard, but also enjoys indoor life, making them an ideal housedog. Health Issues: Prone to allergies, ear infections and obesity. Some common diseases and disorders are, Gastric Torsion (bloating), Hip Dysplasia, Hypothyroidism, Osteochondrosis and Dermoid sinus. Life Span: 8-12 years Litter Size: Relatively small litters. Country of Origin: Thailand. History: They got their name by a ridge growing in the opposite direction to the rest of their coat. They were used for hunting and as a guard dog. The breed is rarely seen outside of Thailand. Breed was kept pure by isolation.
